The four man era

I love all versions of Genesis but, I believe they peaked in 1977 when they played live. The set list was the best, and the performances of the songs sound the best to me.

I personally feel that the band peaked musically during the 4 man era. they created the best musical passages during that period. The band has always been very professional and kept moving forwards one way or another. But when Gabriel left, the expectations were so high that most bands would not be able to survive (just look at what happened after Phil left). However, they moved forward and put out an album that took them to another level (musically speaking). The result was nothing short of outstanding and the band was able to continue. When Steve left, the band made an album that sounded as close to themselves as they could do without Steve. Mike took over the guitar duties and did, in my opinion a good enough job for the fans not to miss Steve enough to let the band rot. As a bonus, the band had their first "real" hit with Follow You, Follow me. However, their live sound changed forever by replacing Steve's guitar with that of Daryl Stuermer. Daryl's done some great work with Jean Luc Ponty (I am a great fan), but his style was too different from Steve's. Mike seems to have learned a thing or two from Daryl throughout the years because when he does a solo now, he sounds like a slower version of Daryl. Funny thing is that somehow Daryl works all right and has done so for thirty years! I still would love to see the 5 man Genesis version tour and augmented by Daryl and Chester.

Thank you Bill.

I listen to the boots from 1977 a lot and you can really tell what Hackett meant to the band. Daryl is a good guitar player but, Steve really had his own special way.
