Hi, I just joined, and you can only guess which lineup I happen to enjoy more: *points to icon*

My favorite album of this ear is SEBTP. I'm not the [biggest] fan of TLLDOB, and if it had a weak side, I honestly think it was side 3. [Except for Lilywhite Lilith - that song had a little bit of funk to it.]

Two songs of this era I could listen to any and every version of: Watchers of the Skies and Firth of Fifth. In the early days, there's not a bad live version of [either] of those songs, although I wish that Tony had done the FoF intro more often than just the twice I happen to have.

I think overall, there are a lot more of Phil's era fans. After all, they commercially hit it big during that period. My kids know about the Gabriel era because of me but, their friends have no idea (and they all are 21 yrs. old). Their last album of commercial significance is now 12 years old. People of 21-22 years of age were only 9-10 years old then. Heck, I even remember introducing some friends of mine to Peter Gabriel back in 1980. They had never heard of him until that day (and of course, they are now huge fans). The only Genesis thing people in the U.S. knew in those days were Follow Me, Follow You. Up in the north and the northern midwest, people knew a little more of Genesis, but in the south or the west (despite of LA), people just had no idea of who they were. And, of course, we are talking in the general sense of the record-buying public.

To me personally, the best Genesis period went from Trespass until Wind & Wuthering. I'm even very fond of ATTWT and DUKE (perhaps because it was a great time in my life and that was the basic soundtrack at the time plus they still carried some of the Genesis sound into them). Creatively speaking Selling England and The Lamb are the albums that rise to the top on my list. In my opinion the best album (as a whole album) they ever did was The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. I have read things like having a weak side four and so on but I don't agree with any of that, I love the thing from beginning to end as it is. However, my favorite all-time song from Genesis has to be Supper's Ready. Other favorites are The Knife, The Cinema Show, Back in NYC, etc., all from that era. But in musical terms, I think the musical passages, bits and pieces are best in A Trick Of The Tail and Wind & Wuthering. I feel that by that period, their efforts to show the world that they could give it a go without Gabriel was just brilliant and the musicianship went up to another level. Steve Hackett's playing really took off and Tony seemed to found the right set of keyboards to go along his beautiful soundscapes. The drumming on songs like Robbery Assault & Battery is as good as Phil got and the whole thing just fit perfectly (musically speaking). The overall sound just got grander in scope with songs like Entangle, and Eleventh Earl of Mars. Ironically Phil's singing ended up sounding like a mix between Gabriel's and Cat Stevens (I like Cat Stevens, specially the early years).

Peter Gabriel's contribution to the band (besides a great voice), was a more abstract way of looking at the music. Peter left Genesis and also found his commercial success after a few years. However, Peter's best album to date (and I doubt he'll ever best it), is his third album. Clearly by then, it wasn't hard to figure out that he and Genesis would be separated by very different musical styles. Now that many years have gone past, the players don't feel the need to prove anything to anyone and in theory, are more willing to work with one another.

So, more than seeing a touring reunion, I wish the 5 of them would record some new material. I love what they did with Carpet Crawlers 99. At first hearing it sounded strange and "not right" but after several plays, it really grew on me. I wouldn't mind to hear more stuff of that sort (that's one of the reasons I created my own project, to experiment into the what if...).

Old Father my friend, 25 members is not a reflection of the whole community. I think overall the whole thing seems to be drying on a bit. The forums are in need of topics that would engage more people into them. On the official forums there are man of those topics but even there, people seems to be just going to a forum of "everything else" or something like that and talk about everything non-sense. I think Genesis, their organisation as well as their official site need to throw the fans some bones form time to time. I would love also for some of the "official" personnel to post on this ning site. I actually prefer the format here and the fact that each member can have their won page which is very easy to personalize and not as cumbersome as "myspace" or as plain as "facebook".

Finally, we should do some posts on the general forum to entice people to talk more about the good 'ol days of the band. then maybe we can get more people appear here.

I'm very much into the 'pastoral' Genesis and think it's a pity they don't use that beautiful doubled 12-string sound anymore.

Is it me or is this community VERY pro Phil and later Genesis? it almost seems like alot of people on here don't ever consider this era that we're all here in this group for. 25 members out of 1,403 ?!?!?! Unbelievable!! I have to stop or it will get ugly!

I'm a fan beyond the "golden era" (up to a certain album in the 80s)
but this is the era I think of the most fondly...!
