Genesis' music is clearly influenced by classical and jazz music. Apart from being in jazz-fusion band Brand X, Phil Collins has cited Buddy Rich and the Mahavishnu Orchestra as influences; Steve Hackett, Bach and Sergovia; Tony Banks, Rachmaninov, Ravel, Mahler, and Shostakovich; Peter Gabriel has cited Nina Simone and Ant Phillips studied classical music. And let's not forget that Chester Thompson was in Weather Report and Daryl Steurmer played for Jean-Luc Ponty...

...So, welcome to the CLASSICAL & JAZZ department! Share and discuss your favourite composers, orchestras, recordings, and jazz musicians....

Naturally, there's also a shelf here for MOVIE SOUNDTRACKS. After all, how much poorer would movies such as Birdy, The Last Temptation of Christ, Against All Odds, Rabbit-Proof Fence, The Wicked Lady, Tarzan and Quicksilver be without contributions from Genesis members?

This group is for those who like nothing more than to spend an afternoon mooching around old record stores...Come on in and browse!

I'm a big Eberhard Weber fan, particularly his solo stuff and his Colours group. The Following Morning, The Colours of Chloe, Later that Evening, etc are some of my favourite albums. I guess his 70's stuff is actually quite proggy in lots of ways and I think that a lot of Genesis/prog fans would really get into his stuff.
And of course he plays bass on Kate Bush's albums!

Quite right. My oversight you are spot on about the drumming David. Bruford's another who brought jazz heavily into prog along with Christian Xander of Magma. Hackett may have jazzed up later but he is on record somewhere as saying he had no time for it in the early Genesis years. I take your point about the discordant sounds though. I think jazz and classical composers had already made moves to break up standeard harmonies and structures in their genres and rock musicians were now starting down a similar path. Sometimes, but not not always, directly connected. Parallel evolution perhaps in the case of Genesis. 'The Waiting Room' is a rare example of Genesis creating jam based discord. In later years Steurmer's jazzier feel appeared to influence Rutherford's playing of gentle jazzy sequences in some of the poppier ballads. I don't think Gabriel ever got to the stage with his flute playing where he could really be said to be stylistically accomplished like say Jackson from Van Der Graaf Generator or Anderson from Jethro Tull who clearly owed a lot to jazz.
I love a lot of ECM label stuff too. Got a favourite? Zakir Hussain's 'Making Music' always does it for me. Whoops baby on loose gotta sign off...

Phil Collins' drumming is very jazzy in the early days. He slips in a lot of fusion moments and I believe that the Watcher in the Skies rhythm is based on a Buddy Rich jazz swing riff.

I also think that some of Steve Hackett's sometimes vaguely discordant guitar work/solos are quite jazzy and remind me of both late sixties jazz guitar work as well as guitar work by guitarists working under the ECM jazz label around the same time.

And Peter's flute work coincides with the flute being used increasingly in small jazz groups from about 1965 onward and then in jazz fusion groups of the early 70's..

Albums such as Trick of the Tail are considered to contain quite a few strong jazz fusion elements.

Just thinking about where we can here these influences in the music. To be honest I think the jazz influences are vanishingly faint, especially in the early music. Like many progressive bands the idea of the sweeping emotional Romantic era theme was a big influence (Yes coming on to Stravinsky's 'Firebird' closing theme for instance). In Genesis big powerful themes from Banks and Hackett were a particular strength. The soaring theme in Firth of Fifth, the mellotron choir backed theme from Cinema Show (Actually the influence of English Choral Church music is much greater than anything jazzy). There's a bit of Rachmaninov about the military 'fanfare' section of One for the Vine.
