My ears belong to Genesis

I was lucky enough to see Genesis first in 1980 on the Duke tour, but at the time I can remember thinking I was 7 or 8 years too late. When I saw Gabriel in 2004 a couple of young guys we met were extremely envious that we'd seen them so "early on"! So it's all a matter of perspective. But just out of interest I'd love to know who saw them first and where? Anybody at the Marquee in 72 or the Reading festival 73?

I didn't see them until 1987, unfortunately, but my uncle saw them in 1970 at the Roundhouse!

I'm envious of you seeing the duke tour, too!

Wow Roundhouse! Trying to think, but Ant was still with them then right? Now I'm rightly envious! I doubt anyone will go earlier than that.

Sadly I was just too late on the scene for this tour. What was the laser cone like? I saw The Musical Box doing the TOTT tour a few weeks back and whilst the show was good the laser was a bit of a disappointment (to a veteran of several Floyd and Tool shows)

My first Genesis concert, and also the first concert I ever went to, was on the W&W tour in February 1977. Truly phenomenal.

The laser was used a few times in that show. During "Apocalypse in 9/8" the cone shot up, over the lighting rig as smoke billowed up from underneath. Then, at the end of SR, it shot down to where Phil stood. And it was used during "Los Endos", like the spokes in a wheel it spun behind the stage.

Don't get too disappointed with the laser in the TMB show. You are talking about a band with a limited budget who are just trying to recreate the best they can what happened on that tour. Even the laser Genesis actually used was still very basic at that time.

The Lamb at Wembley in April 1975 (delayed from November 1974, due to Steve H's cut hand)

Now I'm getting really jealous. Was it a sell out crowd? It must have been their biggest UK gig at that time. Selling England tour they played the Rainbow, but I don't know what the capacity was there; certainly not as big as Wembley.

Yes, it was full. 8000 I believe. Rainbow, I think, is 2700.

I was lucky to see them in Paris in 1976 (I was 16 !!!). With my cousin Marc (who made me discover them in '74) and my first girlfriend Katrijn (that didn't last more than a year but we're still good friends today and both GENESIS fans !). It was my first trip to a foreign land (France, as I lived in Belgium) and without my parents...
In fact, I don't realy remember the concert, just some moments of it. I remember the lights, the incredyble ambiance and the outstanding act of Phil Collins. Those days they called him "The Nar" on Belgian radio.
I also remember there were many members on scene... As I bought the "Seconds Out" record later, I could see they were many more than these days. Getting older... souvenirs vanish... Damn !!!

Wow! Another one I'd loved to have seen. Why did they call Phil "The Nar"? What's it mean?

1980 for me although I did see Peter in 77 and Steve in 79. A mate of mine walked out of the Lamb show because he says he was too hot! I told him I'd have had to have been on fire to even think of moving from my seat!!

I saw Steve at the Reading Festival, that was 79 I think. Around that time I met a bloke at a party who claimed to be Nick Magnus, Steve's keyboard player. I thought he looked too young, so I told him to stop taking the piss. He sort of shrugged his shoulders and walked off. I then spent the Reading gig trying to see if it was him, but to this day I could never decide.

Well, I saw them do the FOXTROT show, SEBTP show, the LAMB twice and Trick (last time I bothered).

Showing my age,
Jim
