Let's see what drum parts you enjoy the best in Genesis music. OK, you can pick all periods. Here goes for me.
1 Los Endos (of course) A special mention to the live versions which has to be heard live, when Chester and Phil do the double drumming.
2 Cinema Show (Live version with Bill Bruford 1976)
3 Behind the Lines
4 Firth of Fifth
5 Eleventh Earl of Mar
6 Home by the Sea
7 Fading Lights
8 Wot Gorilla
9 In That Quiet Earth
10 Tonight, Tonight, Tonight (for the drum machine in the beginning)
This is one of those threads were the answers may change depending on the day. To me, Genesis drumming has always been stronger when played live with two drummers. The energy generated on-stage was never caught the same way in the studio. Overall, the best Genesis drumming on record is found between "Seconds Out" and "Three Sides Live". However, here is my list (with brief explanations) of my favorite drum parts.
1. Cinema Show, Live '76 - Very energetic and the best use of two drummers I've seen.
2. Robbery Assault & Battery, Live '77 - The drumming during the instrumental part drives the whole piece perfectly. It is so well timed to the other instruments that never sees to amaze me.
3. Duke's End - It sounds like an evolution from the drum duet that Phil and Chester played. This piece contains some of the best traits that Phil developed over the years.
4. In that Quiet Earth - On this piece the drums are very "fusionesque" in style. (Brand X anyone?)
5. Firth of Fifth, Live '77 - In my opinion, the best rendition of this song is the one found in Seconds Out.
6. Fading Lights - Great glimpses of the Phil of old.
7. The Battle of Epping Forest - Regardless what some of the fan think, Personally I feel that this piece is a "tour de force" for all instruments, drums included.
8. Watcher of the Skies, Live 76 - Hard to beat that Bruford-Collins combo.
9. Los Endos - A staple.
10. Afterglow Live 81 - My "surprise!" selection. The end of the song is very powerful with both drummers at it whilst the keyboard chords dominate and the bass-line intertwines with the other instruments. The two drums playing practically identical notes just sound very powerful.
Here's my top 10 Genesis drum moments in no particular order:
1. The Fountain of Salmacis ( A great early drum moment from Phil)
2 .Apocalypse in 9/8 from "Seconds Out" (The Definitive version of Suppers Ready)
3. Abacab from the Mama tour.
4. In That Quiet Earth
5. Down and Out (a highly overlooked track in my opinion and one I always crank up and air drum to in the car)
6. Cinema Show (Three Sides Live version)
7. Los Endos (Any version)
8. Do the Neurotic (A great instrumental that should have never been left off of Invisible Touch)
9. Fading Lights (I agree with Leon, great Phil in his last recorded work with the band)
10. Return of the Giant Hogweed
