I don't know how many people are going to agree with me here, but I think that the last progressive album that Genesis made is And Then There Were Three...to me it's the last great Genesis album.
I think that the last solid albums that the band released are probably Genesis ("shapes") and Invisble Touch. I just like most of the songs on those two albums and I think they have a very solid sound...very catchy. I find that We Can't Dance is a bit sad and a little dull...and very tinny production that sounds too clean. I don't know who the producer is but I find it boring. Yeah, it's a good album but to me it's not amazing, especially compared to the other Genesis albums. I even find Calling All Stations more refreshing than that one...Calling All Stations is pretty good.
You're probably right about ATTWT being the last TRULY progressive album (although it contains the pop hit "Follow You, Follow Me", which keeps it from being completely prog.) However, I think "Duke" was also somewhat progressive, though there were more pop elements and the songs were shorter.
To me ,the LAST truly great Progressive album is Wind And Wuthering. Prog through and through.
ATTWT and Duke are incredible albums and have Prog elements, but W & W is THE LAST totally Progressive album.
Cool...I think you could be right for the most part...I guess W&W is 100% prog...but the last Genesis album that I love, that I think is great...prog or not, is And Then There Were Three.
To be hardcore about it I would agree that Wind and Wuthering is the last truly prog Genesis album.
I think that ATTWT has more in common with post Duke Genesis in that the songs are standalone and there's no 'theme' (I know there isn't on W&W either, but somehow it feels like there is one).
Duke was a definite return to the prog style (and I love that album) but I feel that it's a transitional album. Duke is the last album they made with prog motifs, but it's not pedigree like W&W; Duke's a mutt! :)
Wind and Wuthering hands down but all the trio albums have prog songs and help give balance to the post W&W albums. The Lady Lies, Dukes Travels/Dukes End, Dodo/Lurker, Home By the Sea, Dominoe, Fading Lights among others are great prog songs even if they came later, but W&W is their most grandiose and lush sounding album and probably their most complex as well.
Okay, if I had to say which LP is the last TRUE Prog album, then yes, W&W would be the winner. ATTWT is MOSTLY Prog, and Duke I'd call half and half, the true "transition" album.
Do you think they did the "long stuff" to appease the "old fans", or is that "spirit of Prog" still rattling around in their souls?
I think the spirit of prog is still rattling around inside of them just as the spirit of pop was always rattling around ( From Genesis to Revelation, More Fool Me, I Know What I Like, Your Own Special Way), so I don't think it was in anyway meant to appease the old fans its just that Tony and to a lesser extent Mike gravitate to longer more complex material, just look at Calling All Stations in comparison to Invisible Touch and We Can't Dance.
